Robert Douglas was born the 13 November 1841 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, to James and Janet Douglas (Kirkpatrick). He emigrated to East Farnham, Quebec with his family in the 1850s. He was confirmed the 17 July 1868. He married Sarah Louisa Loud in June 1879. They never had any children. During his life, Robert owned a farm, called "Longview", near Cowansville. He died 20 May 1912 and is buried in Cowansville.

It consists of one bound book referred to by family records as "Herbal & Stories", one reproduction (photocopy) and written notes on the history of Scotland. The bound collection consists of school lines of dictation along with diary style entries at the back.
The bound book "Herbal & Stories" shows heavy tide marks and water staining but the writing/ink is in tact. There is no cover and some pages are almost free of the binding. Two loose pages are highly tattered and fragile. There is a large crescent -shaped area of loss at the top left. The bound personal writings are highly delicate, stained and crumbling in some portions.

The file contains primary source information on the business transactions of Robert Douglas from 1869 to 1870. It consists of several account ledgers, which were probably used as student workbooks to practice account-keeping though some entries might be real transactions.
Smaller ledger has dirt encrustations on the front page (no cover) and a large area of loss at the bottom centre. There is water damage staining throughout the document. There is a hole at the bottom centre that penetrates through five pages. One small top corner piece is encapsulated separately.
