Biographical history
The Municipality of Ascot was formed on 1 July 1845. Earlier in 1845, a democratic system of municipal government had been established in Lower Canada, under which elected municipal councils consisting of seven members, who chose the Mayor from their ranks, oversaw the organization and management of local affairs. Ascot Township had been founded by letters patent, and the first land grants made there, in 1803. In 1854, Ascot was united with Westbury for municipal and school-related purposes and Lennoxville, located in Ascot Township, became an independent municipality, though it was not incorporated till 1871. A single secretary-treasurer nevertheless handled both Ascot's and Lennoxville's municipal affairs till 1878.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds contains source material on the development of roads, education, and land ownership in the Municipality of Ascot from 1830 to 1890. It relates mainly to the relations of Ascot Municipal Council with residents, other municipalities (Sherbrooke, Compton, Westbury), and provincial government agencies. The fonds consists mainly of reports and notices on road and bridge construction and maintenance, produced by the local surveyor and his assistants and by the Deputy Grand Voyer. Residents' petitions, Municipal Council correspondence, and land-sale contracts are also present. The fonds is comprised of the following series: Roads and Bridges (1845-1872), Real Estate and Taxation (1831-[1881?]), Education (1846-1851), and Miscellaneous Documents ([185-?]-1891).
