History
Rita Letendre was born in Drummondville, Québec in 1928. In 1941 her family moved from Drummondville to Montréal and she began attending the École de Beaux-Arts of Montréal in 1948. She rejected the traditional figurative representaion and left the school to become associated with the burgeoning avant-garde art milieu of Montréal. She was introduced to Surrealist, Automatiste and abstract art. By the 1960s Letendre had reached an international audience exhibiting in New York and National Gallery of Canada.
