        John Hallowell

        The file contains primary source information on the life of John E. Hallowell from 1846 to 1876. It consists of two prize certificates awarded in 1846 to John Hallowell by the Grammar School in Connection with Bishop's College in Lennoxville; a section of a title deed from the British American Land Company to James Hallowell; a commission appointing John Hallowell to the position of Revenue Inspector for the District of Saint Francis in 1857; and Hallowell's Masonic Text-Book, published in 1857 by A.S. Barnes and Co. in New York and containing his signature; deeds of sale for a land transaction between John Hallowell, Robert Hallowell, John Johnston, and the town of Sherbrooke; articles of clerkship by Edward and John Short; certificates of his appointment to the bar and as a member of the Freemasons Victoria Lodge; a will; a diploma. The file also consists of photographs, a newspaper marriage notice, newspaper obituaries, a summary of a lecture Bowen presented to the Library Association and Mechanics Institute, and a lock of John Hallowell's hair taken at his death.

        Item is a photograph of a road and wooden sidewalk that lead to the second Sherbrooke Court House (Palais de justice), built 1839-1841 and used until 1904, which is visible in the background. The building was given to the 53rd Sherbrooke Regiment in 1912 to serve as their armoury and later on became the armoury for the Sherbrooke Hussars.

        The file contains primary source information on the life of James Hallowell from approximately 1847 to 1858. It consists of certificates appointing him as the Commissioner of Bankrupts and to the Queen's Councel; excerpts from his grandfather, James Hallowell's will; a letter from James Hallowell to his son, John; a letter from James' brother, William; a transcription of James Hallowell's will (probably done by Minnie Hallowell Bowen sometime between the 1880s and 1942); and two photographs.
