Biographical history
Lake Massawippi Water Protection Inc. was founded on 24 August 1968 and incorporated on 7 January 1969. This non-profit organization was formed by citizens around Lake Massawippi who had become concerned with the levels of pollution and the quality of their lake. Although its membership was largely Anglophone in the beginning, over the years Massawippi Water Protection Inc. membership grew substantially and gained a strong Francophone presence so that in 1978 it took on Association pour la protection du lac Massawippi as its French name. For almost 40 years, the Massawippi Water Proctection Inc. has devoted itself to informing and educating citizens on the problems linked to water pollution, the prevention of pollution and soil erosion, the protection of wildlife, and to engage in scientific research about the state of the lake.
Through the identification of key problems, such as sewers and septic systems, they created projects to increase public awareness and initiated new regulations to control the amount of pollutants. In order to carry out their objectives, Massawippi Water Protection Inc. has funded numerous scientific reports, clean-up projects, and community activities as well as as bringing their recommendations to the attention of municipal and provincial governments. Today, the group continues to carry out a number of projects to reduce the level of pollution in the lake, protect the shoreline, and sensitize the public regarding issues concerning the lake and the environment.
