        History

        George Edward Jobel was born in 1921 from the union of Helen Povey (1897-1947) and Arthur Jobel (1890-1972). He also had a brother, Ronald Charles Jobel born in 1919 and died in 1986. In 1943, he married Elma May Wilson (1915-1999) with whom he had a son, Gregory, in 1953; the child died the same year. After Elma's death, George Jobel remarried with Arlene May Wells-Jobel, his brother’s widow. George Jobel died 24 March 2006 and is buried in United Church Cemetery in Hatley with Elma and their son Gregory.
        George Jobel worked for the newspaper The Record. He also worked for the newspaper The Sentinel. He was in the Editorial Committee of the Sherbrooke Hospital Centenary Souvenir Album. He also wrote two books: Hatley 1900-1998 and A Century of Fellowship (about the Snow Shoe Club). He was involved since 1952 as president, treasurer or member of the Snow Shoe Club of Sherbrooke. He was a volunteer at the Golden Age Club of Ayer’s Cliff and, in 1991, he was the secretary. He also presided the City Bowling League. He was involved with St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in the 1960s. He was doing music sheets for the many events in which he participated.
        George Jobel was heavily involved in the municipal life of Hatley. He moved to the town around 1960. He organized multiple events like Canada Day celebrations on the 1st of July. He was the chairman of the Hatley Municipal Association for multiple years. He also took the role of municipal councilor until 1994. He was a member of the Quebec Liberal Party.
