Biographical history
James Miller was born in Richmond on 24 May 1834 to William Miller and Rebecca Bowes. His father, William, an early settler, was well-known and respected in Richmond for his work as tailor and his involvement in the community. James was the second eldest of William and Rebecca's thirteen children. He moved to Ulverton, probably in the 1850s, where he ran established a general store with a few of his brothers: Robert T. Miller and John Miller.
James married Mary Selina Reid on 21 September 1860. It appears that the couple did not have any children and Selina died in 1889. He later remarried to a Mary F. and they had two daughters together: Frances (b. 1895) and Marguerite (b. 1897). He worked most of his professional life as a merchant in Ulverton and also served as the postmaster for a time in the 1890s. It was not until the early 1900s that he finally retired from storekeeping. James died in Dedham, Massachusetts on October 15, 1914 and was buried in Ulverton.
