Wheeler family fonds

The fonds contains primary and secondary source information regarding the Wheeler family, starting with Austin Wheeler (1797-1866), married to Charlotte Sopia Knowlton (1806-1831) and Charlotte Miller (1815-1846). It includes personal documents, land transactions, financial documents and secondary source genealogical information. There are also many documents related directly to Julia Wheeler (1875-1962), daughter of Thomas Wood Wheeler (1830-1919) and Anna Duboyce (1833-1910), including correspondence and her poetry, and an audio cassette of an interview with Rhoda Wheeler Northrup entitled 'Mother Reminiscing about Aunt Julia'. The photographs depicts some of the Wheeler family, and a photo album owned by Rhoda Wheeler Northrup. An addition was made in 2023 consisting of 2.0 cm of textual records about the piece of land where the Wheeler homestead is located in Knowlton, and documents about successions and estates involving Thomas Wood Wheeler.

The fonds contains primary source material pertaining to Matrix magazine (published in Lennoxville, QC from 1974 to 1988). The material in the fonds spans from 1913 to 1921, and from 1974 to 1995. It consists of correspondence, largely with Matrix editor Philip Lanthier, regarding the administration and content of the magazine. The fonds also consists of prints of work submitted to the magazine, 53 photographs (including 12 35mm negatives) from The Seventh Moon poetry readings, featuring Irving Layton, Lucien Francoeur, and Ralph Gustafson, as well as 55 miscellaneous photographs (including 18 35mm negatives). Other items found in the fonds include an award certificate for Joyce Marshall in Matrix (1984), transparencies of artworks, sketches for the magazine, a Seventh Moon Poetry Reading poster, and press clippings. The fonds is comprised of the following series: Correspondence ([1974-1991?]), Administration (1974-1988), Promotional Material ([1974-after 1985?]), Special Events ([1980?]-1995), Design Process ([1913-1921], [1974-1995?]).

1) Joseph Amos McLoughlin: The first series focuses on Joseph's personal, professional and legal endeavours throughout his life. There is an emphasis on his time as an Inspector of School for the District of Bedford (1870-1888).
2) Charlotte Elizabeth Willard: This second series focuses on Charlotte's personal and legal responsibilities as an estate executor. There is an emphasis on her extensive correspondence throughout her life with family and friends.
3) McLoughlin Willard families: The third series highlights the implications of both families mainly in correspondence in the early to mid 19th century and some photographs. There is also a significant amount of letters from the children of Joseph and Charlotte McLoughlin.
4) Family photographs, including John A. McLoughlin and Charlotte Willard portraits.

The collection contains mainly source material on the geography and landscapes of the Eastern Townships from Energy, Mines & Resources, Government of Canada, from 1933 to 1978. It covers the counties of Richmond, Sherbrooke, Compton, Frontenac, Shefford, Drummond, Brome, Stanstead, Missisquoi and Megantic. It also covers the areas of Thetford, Upton, Verchères, Richelieu, Montreal, Sorel, Joliette, Berthier, Ste. Marie, Quebec city, Portneuf, Lotbinière, Chateauguay and the county of Rouville. It also contains aerial photographs by Photograph Surveys Inc. carried out in 1956 and 1957, which are largely of industrial areas of Sherbrooke and, in particular, Ingersoll-Rand. Aerial photographs provide direct visual evidence of the landscape and a three dimensional view of the earth and its features that is not available from ground level. It consists of aerial photographs and maps.
