Farmers' Diaries

The file consists of four diaries: one diary of a farmer from Lacolle, dated 1836-1839, divided up into three booklets; a photocopy of "The Farm Journal of P.H. Gosse from the Season of 1837"; "The Farmers' Manual and Complete Accountant", edited and compiled by J.L. Nichols and Co., dated 1895, filled out by Bonn Little ca. 1903, North Hatley; and Mr. Dufy's diary covering the years 1903-1909. The file provides information on the development of agriculture in the Eastern Townships. Many details are provided on the following subjects: weather forecasting, cattle breeding, transportation, health, and cultural and political events such as the Rebellion of 1837. The farmers' manual contains general information on farming accountancy and records of production.

Caroline immigrated to Canada with her family in 1836. She married John Coombs in 1837. The file consists of a memorial booklet written by Eva A. Coombs, Caroline's grand-daughter.

The file consists of a photocopy of a clipping entitled Late Carlos Skinner to be honoured by Bell Pioneers and a photocopy of a letter written by Emily Elliott Skinner in Sherbrooke, dated 1910, to her son Albert Carlos Skinner. The file gives information on the settlement of the Elliott family, who came from New Hampshire in 1800. Carlos Young Skinner was the husband of Emily Elliott Skinner. He was the founder of the People's Telephone Company, which later became the Eastern Townships Telephone Company.

The file consists of photocopies of typed documents related to Irving Orrin Vincent: a letter written by his son; a letter by A. E. Taylor, dated 12 April 1908, and his eulogy read by Reverend Dr. R. W. Dickie on 23 February 1920. The file gives information on Irving Orrin Vincent, M.A., born in January 1885 at St-Armand. He attended Stanstead Academy and McGill University and then he taught at Sherbrooke and Cookshire. Orrin Vincent was involved in the Protestant Teachers' Association as Vice-President and also in the development of the Quebec educational system.

The file consists of one scrapbook pertaining to Ellis Parker Esq. of Barnston and covering the years 1890 to 1941. Clippings are pasted into an "Old Sessional Papers" book. It also contains writings by Parker Ellis (such as poems), and an extract of a letter dated 14 March 1935, from the House of Commons of Canada, which provides a review of the achievements and policies of the government from 1930 to 1935. The file provides information mainly on religious matters, and contains death notices and obituaries; but it also contains information on people such as Churchill and the Royal Family of England.

The file consists of a photocopy of a manuscript, dated 1876, about the genealogy of the Hurd family in Newport Township. Edmund Heard settled in Newport in 1794. The file provides data such as names, dates of birth and death, and the place of settlement. The file also includes a copy of a brief history of the family from the 11th century until the 19th century.

It consists of a copy of "Samuel June Barrows: A Circuit Rider in the Humanities" by Paul U. Kellogg and a copy of an article by Michael M. Davis titled "A History of Lake Memphremagog Region," originally published in the Sherbrooke Record on March 21, 1964, which discusses the Barrows family's summer properties on Lake Memphremagog.

The file consists of five programmes: "Soirée musicale" in aid of the funds of the 1st Lennoxville Volunteer Rifle Corps, at the Albion Hotel, Lennoxville, on 16 February 1863; "The Hidden Gem, a Shamrock Evening", at Mont Notre-Dame, Sherbrooke; Creatore and his Famous Band, at his Majesty's Theatre, Sherbrooke, on 3 May 1916; "Esther the Beautiful Queen", at Town Hall, Cookshire; Last Concert Season of Sherbrooke Symphony Orchestra at the Clement Theatre, Sherbrooke, 1 May 1911; Patriotic Concert at Sherbrooke High School, 23 May 1916; an undated programme for a Campaign Concert in Melbourne; a programme for the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra presented by Community Concert Association and performed at the Granada Theatre in 1954; Waterloo Academy Annual Concert, 8 December 1911; and a programme for Youth for Christ's theatre troupe, Refuge's performance of Streetlight in 1996. It also consists of material for Le Festival St-Zénon de Piopolis including eight programs between 2001 and 2004, correspondence, and a newspaper clipping.
