Biographical history
The Municipal Chapter of Sherbrooke of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.) was founded in April 1911. At the time, it grouped together three primary chapters created a few months earlier: the King George Fifth, Sir John Sherbrooke, and Duke of Wellington chapters. Over the years, several other primary and junior chapters were added to these. The I.O.D.E. is a patriotic organization that admits only female subjects of Commonwealth countries who are loyal to the reigning sovereign. The objectives of the I.O.D.E. and its chapters are to promote education in all forms and in particular the study of history and current events. They support widows, orphans, and dependants of Commonwealth soldiers, the poor, and the distressed. No regard is taken of race, colour, religion, or sex. As well, they support the advancement of the arts and they make financial contributions to charitable work. The mandate of the Municipal Chapter of Sherbrooke is to supervise and co-ordinate the work of the primary and junior chapters under its jurisdiction. In 1925, this chapter set up an independent organization dedicated to fighting tuberculosis, the I.O.D.E. Memorial Hospital for Tuberculosis. In 1936, however, it handed the institution over to the Canadian Legion in Sherbrooke. From the 1940s to the early 1970s, the Municipal Chapter's membership gradually waned as the Sherbrooke-area English-speaking population shrank. It was at last dissolved in 1974, and three of the primary chapters it oversaw merged to form the Sherbrooke Chapter.
