        History

        John E. Hallowell was born on 10 September 1829, the son of James Hallowell and Margaret McKay. Hallowell studied law at McGill University and was appointed to the bar in 1851, was a member of the St. Francis Bar, a member of the Freemasons Victoria Lodge, and a field officer in the Sherbrooke cavalry. He married Helen Maria Clark on 15 September 1858 and together they had four children: Harry James Brooks (1859-1860), Minnie Henrietta Bethune (1861-1942), Robert Harrison (1862-1863) and Meredyth Bowen (1865-1893). John Hallowell died 23 April 1876 of consumption.
