Biographical history

Emmanuel United Church, initially of Methodist denomination, was organized in 1901. The church was built in 1899 and dedicated in 1901. In 1925, when the United Church of Canada was founded, amalgamating the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches, the Methodist Church in East Angus joined the Union, becoming the East Angus United Church. In 1937, the church was renamed Emmanuel United Church. In 1942, the Bishopton United Church joined Emmanuel United Church to form the East Angus-Bishopton Pastoral Charge. In 1965 the Bury United Church was added to the Pastoral Charge then renamed East Angus-Bishopton-Bury Pastoral Charge. The congregation still worships in the building twice a month from Easter to Christmas. Emmanuel United Church is under the jurisdiction of the Quebec and Sherbrooke Presbytery of the Montreal and Ottawa Conference of the United Church of Canada. The Church is governed by the Board of Trustees, the Official Board, the Board of Stewards and the Congregation in co-operation with organizations within the Church, such as the Women's Organizations.

Scope and content

The fonds contains source material on Church management, the congregation's affairs, and the Church's women's organizations for the Emmanuel United Church in East Angus from 1901 to 1993. It also provides information on the East Angus and Bishopton Pastoral Charge from 1958 to 1972. It consists mainly of minutes, account books, and annual reports. The fonds is comprised of the following series: Church Boards (1901-2013), Buildings and Property (1928, 1969, 1972), Financial Resources (1908-1981), Annual Reports (1974), Orders of Service (1976), Funds (1957-1978), Historical (1934, 1976), Organizations (1913-1984), and Photographs (1991, 1993).

Immediate source of acquisition

The documents were loaned in 1993 by the Montreal and Ottawa Conference of the United Church of Canada. A second accession was transferred to the Archives in 1995.

Arrangement

The archives of the Quebec and Sherbrooke Presbytery local churches and pastoral charges are all arranged according to a common classification system established by Susan Stanley, former Montreal and Ottawa Conference Archivist.
