Biographical history

The painter Doris Snowdon (nee Lucy Doris Maffre) is born in Montreal on January 7, 1897. She married James Clifford Snowdon in 1921 and had three children (two sons and one daughter). She began painting at age 60 after she raised her family. She took her first painting courses in the 1950's at the Women's Art Society of Montreal. She studied with two well-known Canadian artists, Adam Sherriff Scott and Oscar de Lall. Her works represent landscapes and life arrangements of flowers. She had a studio at her house, but also made many of her works at her cottage near Knowlton. During her career, she also drew a few sketches. She ceased painting at age 93 and died in Montreal February 9, 1996.

Custodial history

Marjorie L. Mikasen inherited some of the documents from her mother, Helen (née Snowdon) Mikasen, who inherited them from her parents, Cliff and Doris Snowdon. The rest of the documents were created by Marjorie Mikasen.
