Manda T. Cushing was born in Putney, Vermont the 10 November 1798, the son of Benjamin Cushing and Sally Thurber. He moved to Stanstead Plain in 1820, where he was a saddle and harness-maker. From approximately 1824 to 1830, he shared the business with Joseph W. Martin. In 1830, he moved to Barnston. Manda married first Sally Hazeltine on 28 September 1823 in Newbury, Vermont. Together they had three children: George Shaw (1825-1894), John Hazeltine (b. 1827), and Addison Benjamin (1828-1913). After Sally's death on 6 July 1829, Manda married second Dorothy Pinkham on 16 December 1829. Together they had three children: Sarah Elizabeth (1833-1872), Mary Dorothea (1835-1903), and Sophronia Peck (1837-1911). After Dorothy's death on 16 May 1843, Manda married third Patty (Martha) E. Abbott in Groton, Vermont on 24 October 1843. Together they had five children: William Thurber (b. 1844), Edward Abbott (1846-1913), Emma Eliza (b. 1848), Charles Jackson (1850-1931) and Nancy Wesson (1852-1921). In addition to working as a harness-maker, Manda Cushing was also involved in local government, schooling and acted as a deacon in the Baptist Church. Manda died on 21 August 1885 and is buried in the Barnston Pleasantview Cemetery.
