Name of creator
Eastern Townships historian Monseigneur Albert Gravel was born on 7 November 1894 in Saint-Laurent, near Montreal. He studied at the Séminaire de Sainte-Thérèse, at the Collège de l'Assomption and at the Grand Séminaire de Montréal. He was ordained priest in 1920 and was curate successively in Bromptonville, North Ham, and Coaticook. From 1925 to 1938, he was priest of Springhill (Nantes), from 1938 to 1945 of Saint-Herménégilde, and from 1945 to 1957 of the parish Ste-Jeanne d'Arc in Sherbrooke. In 1957, he was named domestic prelate (which entitled him to the designation 'Monseigneur'). Between 1957 and 1969, Gravel was archivist for the history section of the Archevêché de Sherbrooke and a teacher at Collège du Sacré-Coeur and Collège du Mont Sainte-Anne. He published numerous articles and books on the history of the Eastern Townships and gave many lectures. He died in Sherbrooke on 23 June 1978.
Scope and content
The fonds contains information on the colonization of the Eastern Townships in the 19th century and source material on Mgr. Gravel's work as a historian. It consists of an album of clippings of his writings; a manuscript; two lectures given before the Eastern Townships Historical Society by Leonard A. Auger and Adolphe Fournier, respectively, and annotated by Mgr. Gravel; and a text written by Mgr. Maurice O'Bready on the Hale family. The fonds is comprised of the following series: Press Clippings (1958), Historical Writings ([195-?]) and Eastern Townships Historical Society (1960).
