Farnam's Corner United Church, initially of Methodist denomination, was organized around 1843. It was called the East Dunham Methodist Church until 1908 when it was renamed Farnam's Corner Church. In 1925, when the United Church of Canada was founded, amalgamating the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches, Farnam's Corner Church decided to join the Union. In 1968, due to decreasing membership the church closed and the building was sold to an individual. Farnam's Corner United Church was under the jurisdiction of the Quebec and Sherbrooke Presbytery of the Montreal and Ottawa Conference of the United Church of Canada. The church was governed by the Board of Stewards and the Congregation.

Fargues, Jean

Jean Fargues is the son of Pierre Fargues and Henriette Guichaud of Quebec City being the 7th out of 9 children. After the death of her husband in 1780, Henriette married Thomas Dunn on November 27, 1783 and they had 3 children. Jean Fargues enrolled in the 60th Infantry Regiment on November 23, 1796 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1798 and Captain in 1799. We lose track of Jean Fargues in 1804.

Excelsior Glass Company

The Foster Brothers of the St. John, Québec (now known as Saint-Jean-sur Richelieu) glass factory was bought by the Yuile Brothers in 1878 and renamed the Excelsior Glass Company. In 1880 they moved the operation to Montréal and remained there until 1883. In 1883, they transferred to another location in Montréal and changed the name to the North American Glass Company, incorporated in 1883. The firm operated under that name until 1891 when it became the Diamond Glass Company. Operations were carried on under that name until 1902. In that year, the name was changed to the Diamond Flint Glass Company Ltd. The Diamond Flint Glass Company Ltd. acquired control of the all-important Burlington Glass Works, the Hamilton Glass Works, the Nova Scotia Glass Company of Trenton, Nova Scotia, the Lamont Glass Company, and, through its successor the Diamond Flint Glass Company, additional glass factories in Québec and Ontario.

Ewing (family)

John Ewing, his wife Jean Carter, and their children immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1837 and settled in the Township of Melbourne. Many of their descendants remained in the Eastern Townships. One of these, John Ewing, became Registrar of Richmond in the 1890s and was Mayor of Melbourne from 1898 to 1901 and from 1902 to 1906. Some members of the family, however, left the region for Montreal or California and corresponded with their family in the Townships.

Estrie-Vie was founded in July 1982 by a group of citizens opposed to the building by Hydro-Québec of a high-voltage transmission line in the Eastern Townships. The main objective of this organization was to act for the community against Hydro-Québec's plans. Estrie-Vie collaborated with the Union des producteurs agricoles, the Institut d'aménagement de l'Université de Sherbrooke, Hydro-Watch, the Commission municipale contre le tracé ouest, and the Conseil régional de développement des Cantons de l'Est. The group attended information sessions organized by Hydro-Québec and took part in the public hearings held in 1983 by the Bureau d'audiences publiques sur l'environement. Despite the protest, the line was built and Estrie-Vie ceased its activities.

Estrie Young Singers is an auditioned choir for children founded in 1987 by Nancy Rahn and a group of volunteer parents. It was incorporated in 1990 as a non-profit organization having its head office in Lennoxville. The choir's French name is "Les jeunes chanteurs de l'Estrie". Its mandate is to provide solid musical and singing training to children aged 8 to 16 years old. The choir gives concerts, performs for organizations and churches throughout the Townships, and participates in regional events. The choir is directed by a Parents' Committee including, as ex officio members, the choir director and the accompanist. The Parents' Committee is responsible for administrative and financial matters and the choir director for all musical decisions. Financial resources available come from fees, fund-raising activities, and private donations. Nancy Rahn was Choir Director was from 1987 to 1998 and Annette Ýien from 1998 to 1999; accompanists have been Cheryl Stroud, Gloria Scott, and Sarah Heath. The Estrie Young Singers suspended its activities in 1999.

Erle United Church, initially of Methodist denomination, was organized in the 19th century as part of the Marbleton Mission, which included Dudswell, Marbleton and Bishop's Crossing (now Bishopton). In 1925, when the United Church of Canada was founded, amalgamating the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational Churches, the Erle Methodist Church decided to join the Union. Erle United Church was under the jurisdiction of the Quebec and Sherbrooke Presbytery of the Montreal and Ottawa Conference of the United Church of Canada.

Epps, Bernard, 1936-2007

Bernard Epps was born in Whitstable, Kent county, England in 1936. In 1950, his family immigrated to Ohio. In 1953, he graduated from High School and began work as a draftsman in Columbus, to make money to fund his education at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. After four years of alternating between school and work, he voyaged with some friends to California, where he worked as a draftsman, designing ceramic microchips and working for (among other places) Litton industries. In 1965, he married Susan Dreger. In 1966, he purchased his father's farm in Gould Station, Quebec in order to devote his time to farming and writing. In 1967, his only child, Jennifer, was born. In the early to mid 1960s, he began his writing career, publishing several short stories, and it was in 1967, that he would publish his first novel, Pilgarlic the Death. In 1973, he published the immensely popular The Outlaw of Megantic. In the 1980s, he joined Charles Bury in running the Townships Sun, a newspaper devoted to representing the Eastern Townships Anglophone community. He continued to contribute to the paper late into life, writing mostly on the subjects of Townships' history and culture. In addition to his contributions to the Townships Sun, he also contributed significantly to the Sherbrooke Record, and in other newspapers and journals. Mr. Epps also spent some time as a teacher with adult extension programmes at Lennoxville's Champlain Regional college, and the Eastern Townships School board, teaching such subjects as creative writing and local history. In 1995, Mr. Epps moved to Lennoxville. Other notable publications on Mr. Epps' resume include: Tales of the Townships(1980)., The Royal Rifles of Canada in Hong Kong, 1941-1954 (1981)- editor., More Tales of the Townships (1985)., Second Blessing: a centennial history of the Sherbrooke Hospital, 1888-1988. (1988) - published in both French and English, The Eastern Townships Adventure (1992)., Please sir, I'd Rather be Ravished: selected rhymes and reasons (2000).

Bernard Epps passed away on 5 July 2007 in Kingston, Ontario at the age of 71.

Emmanuel United Church, initially of Methodist denomination, was organized in 1901. The church was built in 1899 and dedicated in 1901. In 1925, when the United Church of Canada was founded, amalgamating the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches, the Methodist Church in East Angus joined the Union, becoming the East Angus United Church. In 1937, the church was renamed Emmanuel United Church. In 1942, the Bishopton United Church joined Emmanuel United Church to form the East Angus-Bishopton Pastoral Charge. In 1965 the Bury United Church was added to the Pastoral Charge then renamed East Angus-Bishopton-Bury Pastoral Charge. The congregation still worships in the building twice a month from Easter to Christmas. Emmanuel United Church is under the jurisdiction of the Quebec and Sherbrooke Presbytery of the Montreal and Ottawa Conference of the United Church of Canada. The Church is governed by the Board of Trustees, the Official Board, the Board of Stewards and the Congregation in co-operation with organizations within the Church, such as the Women's Organizations.

Emmanuel United Church came into being following the amalgamation in 1925 of the Methodist and the Congregational Churches in Cowansville. Both churches were organized around 1844. It was decided to use the Congregational Church building and the parsonage for the new church and to use the Methodist Church building as a church hall. Emmanuel United Church, which is part of the Cowansville Area Pastoral Charge, is under the jurisdiction of the Quebec and Sherbrooke Presbytery of the Montreal and Ottawa Conference of the United Church of Canada. The church is governed by the Board of Trustees, the Official Board, the Board of Stewards, the Session and the Congregation in cooperation with organizations within the Church, such as the United Church Women, the Young People's Union, and the Epworth League of Christian Endeavour.
