Roland William Racicot was born on December 21, 1919 in Sherbrooke hospital and was the only son of W.D Racicot and Irma Racicot. He attended Sherbrooke Highschool and Stanstead College. He went on to become a Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Airforce. On July 5th 1943, he married Ruby May Baldwin in Vancouver, BC. Together they had 4 children: Peter, Sharon, Stephen, and Janice. Roland Racicot spent the late 1940s in Ajax, Ontario where he attended university to study law. His family eventually returned to Quebec in the early 1950s where Mr. Racicot became a partner at the Foster, Hannen, Watt, Leggat and Colby law firm in Montreal. In 1958, he set up an office in Coaticook to conduct his own law practice. He passed away in 1984 and is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Magog.

Lemay, Noël, 1890-1967

Noël Lemay was born on December 25, 1890 in Garthby. He is the son of Pierre Lemay (d. 1899) and Arthémise Lepage (d. 1923).

In 1899, the family home in Garthby burned down following a large fire that also destroyed almost a third of the village of Garthby. Noël's family emigrated to the United States. Noël studied in East Hampton (Massachusetts, USA) from 1899 to 1904. His stay in East Hampton allowed him to study in English, but also to visit Boston and to discover many facets of American culture, notably the abundance of visual arts and photography. He became perfectly bilingual, which eventually opened many doors for him.

Noël married Marie-Louisa (Lauza) Campeau on July 17, 1916. They had 15 children, one of whom died at birth and another in his first year of life.

Noël was the local administrator for the Brompton Pulp and Paper Company from 1917 to 1930. Due to the Great Depression of 1929, the Brompton Pulp and Paper Company closed its Garthby office in 1930. Noël and his family moved to Bishopton. Noel worked for Mr. Sydney Bishop's casket making business there.

In the 1940's, Noël and his family moved to Ville Saint-Laurent (Montreal).
There, Noël worked for an architect for a few years. His mandates led him to design architectural details, and furniture, ornaments and decorations in large stores in Montreal.

He died on September 2, 1967 in Ville Saint-Laurent at the age of 76. His wife Lauza died in February 1976 in Montreal.

Martin was Surveyor of Highways for the [South] East District in Holland, VT (1821-1827) and a Justice of the Peace (1824-1833). He died in 1863.

The 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion, created in 1915, was part of the 8th Infantry Brigade of the 3rd Canadian Division of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In September 1934, members of the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion who had served during World War I organized the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Association to perpetuate the memory and the tradition of their battalion. The Association was run by a four-member board elected annually. Its main activity was the annual reunion of its members, who had belonged to the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion or the Company of the Eastern Townships Mounted Rifles. In 1967, the last meeting was held and the Association disbanded.

Mead Haskell Baldwin was born 28 September 1891 in Baldwin's Mills, the youngest son of Willis K. Baldwin and Lill M. Ferrin. He attended the Holmes Model School in Stanstead for his elementary education. By the early 1910s, he had moved to the United States to study and work as a book-keeper. Mead served as a soldier with the American Expeditionary Force in World War I. He never married.

Mead Baldwin passed away in Baldwin's Mills 17 February 1921 and was buried at the Lakeview Cemetery in Baldwin's Mills.

Artist Kay Kinsman was born in Los Angeles, California on 27 June 1909. Kinsman attended private school in Havana, Cuba; Jamaica; and New York City. She then studied at the Parsons School of Applied Arts in Paris, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Malvern School of Art in England. Kinsman met Ronald Lewis Kinsman in Paris and was married to him there in 1932. The couple had three children. It was Ronald Kinsman's appointment at IBM that brought the couple to Montreal in 1937 or 1938. The city was Kay Kinsman's home until 1971, when, having been a widow since 1965, she went to England for several years to paint. In 1981, she returned to Quebec, settling in Lennoxville. Since living in Lennoxville, she obtained BAs in two fields from Bishop's University (1983) and an M.A. in medieval history from McGill University. Kinsman specialized in water colours but worked in other media at various times. She illustrated several books and has published three books of her sketches: "Montreal Sketchbook" (1967), "Broadway Sketchbook" (1974), and "Lennoxville Sketchbook/Sur le vif" (1990). Over the years, she participated in several exhibits in England and Canada. In 1989, Bishop's University awarded Kinsman an honorary doctorate. She passed away in August, 1998, at the age of 89.

Willis Keith Baldwin, better known as simply W. K., was born 17 March 1857 in Barnston and was the youngest son of John Percival Baldwin and Jeanette Baker. W. K. studied for some time at Stanstead Wesleyan College but was also a self-taught learner. He was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1913. Included among his numerous business and political activities, he succeeded his father as owner of the Baldwin family's mills, was a director of both the Canadian Crocker Wheeler Company and Southern Canada Power, contributed funds to construct roads in the Townships of Barnston and Stanstead, and was an extensive land owner throughout the Eastern Townships and Vermont. He also was elected as a Member of Parliament as a Liberal from 1917 to 1930, when he retired from politics. As the Member of Parliament for Stanstead County and a devout Methodist, W.K. Baldwin lobbied for the union of the Methodist, Congregationalist, and Presbyterian Churches and was instrumental in the passing of the "Act incorporating The United Church of Canada in 1924."

W. K. Baldwin married Lill Mead Ferrin (1859-1935), of Holland, Vermont, 17 March 1881. They had two children: Harold Ferrin and Mead Haskell. W. K. Baldwin was murdered at his general store by Kenneth Brown, on 18 April 1935. He is buried at the Lakeview Cemetery in Baldwin's Mills.

Willis Keith Baldwin, known more commonly as Keith, was born 27 December 1922 in Baldwin's Mills, the eldest son of Harold F. Baldwin and Ruth S. May. He attended high school at Stanstead College, a private boys school in Stanstead, Quebec, which he graduated from in 1940. Keith served with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) during the Second World War. He became a metallurgical engineer and moved to Lennoxville with his wife, Evelyn Rowe (1923-2015). Together they had four children: Bill, David, Nancy, and Dale. Keith gifted the land which now comprises the Parc H. F. Baldwin in Baldwin’s Mills to the Town of Barnston (now Coaticook) to create a nature reserve with public access. The park land includes the Barnston Pinnacle and is named after Keith's father, Harold F. Baldwin

David Wayne Baldwin was born March 24th, 1951, in Montreal and moved to Lennoxville with his family shortly after. His parents were Willis Keith (Keith) and Evelyn Baldwin (Rowe). He has three siblings: his older brother Willis Keith (Bill) Baldwin, his younger sister Nancy Baldwin, and his younger brother Dale Baldwin. A graduate of the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, David worked in agriculture all his life. David married Carolyn Anne Rowell (daughter of Herbert and Nina Rowell of Bury, Quebec) on Saturday September 6th, 1980 in Senneville, Que. Together they had three children, first a daughter named Jori Elizabeth Marie Baldwin, second, a son named Oliver Wayne Baldwin, and third, a daughter named Emily (Elim) May Baldwin. They moved to Baldwin’s Mills full time in 1990 where he ran the Baldwin family maple and forestry business. David was instrumental in the founding of Parc H. F. Baldwin in Baldwin’s Mills. The park land includes the Barnston Pinnacle and was gifted by his father to the Town of Barnston (now Coaticook) to create a nature reserve with public access. It is named after David’s grandfather Harold F. Baldwin. David spent many years as the chairman of the park’s organization committee where he was involved in the preservation and inventorying of the biodiversity in the park.

Codère, cette association vise le regroupement des canadiennes-françaises du diocèse dans le but de fortifier leur action dans la famille et dans la société. Le Cercle Marguerite-Bourgeoys, fondé en 1914 par un groupe de jeunes filles réunies dans un but d'étude, fut le noyau des oeuvres féminines à Sherbrooke. Viennent ensuite une quinzaine de ramifications dont les Dames de la Charité, l'Assistance maternelle, l'Association professionnelle des employées de bureau, etc...

Le Soupirail

Société artistique et littéraire fondée en 1940 par le journaliste Louis C. O'Neil, dont le premier président fut Maurice O'Bready, le Soupirail invite ses membres à plusieurs types d'activités telles que des conférences, les Mardis du Soupirail et dîners annuels. En novembre 1942, la société se dote d'un journal appelé Le Tuyau.
