Brainerd, Lavina Merry

Lavina Merry Chamberlain came to Canada in 1873 at the age of 9 to live with her Aunt, Clara Mack. Later she moved to Rock Island to be closer to Stanstead College where she graduated from and became a teacher. She married Israel Wright Brainerd on April 3 1885 and soon after they moved to Boston, Massachusetts.

David, Polly and Ebenezer Hovey and their family along with Joseph Ives and Isaac Rexford were the first members of this family to settle in Quebec. They moved to Hatley in 1794 from Charlotte, Vermont.

Copping (famiily)

John Alexander Copping (a.k.a. Jack) was born in Rawdon, Quebec in 1868, the son of John Copping and Nancy Marlin. Sarah Alice Mason was born in Rawdon, Quebec in 1873, the daughter of Edward Mason and Mary Copping. John and Alice, as she was known, were married in 1896. Shortly after their marriage, they moved from Rawdon to a farm in Compton Township. Between 1906-1908, they bought a farm at Sand Hill, in Eaton Township. They did not have any children. John died in 1949 and Alice died in 1960.

Annie Mariah Mason, Alice's sister, was born 7 December 1869, the daughter of Edward Mason and Mary Copping. She married John (Jack) Richard Copping in Montreal in 1893. Together, they had two children: Vivian and Rita. The couple lived in Montreal, and in Lennoxville for a brief time. After their separation, Annie returned to Montreal and the children when to live with an aunt and uncle. Annie died 4 December 1965.

Draper (family)

Calvin Draper was born on 9 March 1815 in the township of Compton. He was the son of Jonathan and Ruth Draper. Calvin died on 7 May 1874 in the township of Compton.

Rosella Quimby was born on 13 June 1812 in the township of Barnston. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Catherine Quimby. She died on 31 May 1875 in the township of Compton.

Calvin Draper and Rosella Quimby got married in February 1842. They had three daughters: Mary born on 6 April 1843, Catherine born on 5 July 1844, and Julia Elizabeth born on 16 December 1853.

Ord
Family

John A. Ord (May 6th, 1865 to 1953) was the son of Henry Ord and Mary Ann Moss. John married Emma Torkelson (1870 to June 20th, 1902). They are buried in St. John's Cemetery, Brookbury. Their children were: Ann and Mary (August 6th, 1890), Mary Annie Matthew (August 18th, 1891 to November 19th, 1979), Annie McCarthy (b. December 14th, 1894), Henry (January 20th, 1896 to December 7th, 1989), Pansy Maria Buttemer (April 10th, 1898 to November 28th, 1988), and George A. (May 24th, 1900 to January 29th, 1979).

Sharman
Family

Walter George Sharman (October 30th, 1863 - November 15th, 1925). Walter was married to Eliza Ann Clark (d. February 15th, 1892 aged 30 years), daughter of Robert Clark and Eliza Ann Woods. Walter was the son of Ebenezer (November 30th, 1824 to May 4th, 1900) from Suffolk, England, and Caroline Bennett (June 23rd, 1826 to March 23rd, 1909). Walter had five siblings: James, Sarah, Mary, Lucy (m: Charles Bown). Eliza is buried in the Bury Cemetery, Walter is buried in the Bown Cemetery.

Warren
Family

Charles Warren (1834 - November 14th, 1911) arrived with his parents, Reverend John Warren and Eliza Gaskin in Compton in 1836. Twenty years later he took up residence in Brookbury where he was a successful farmer, a councillor, clerk of the Advent Church Society. Charles married Lydia Rowell (August 30th, 1834 to December 9th, 1914, in New York state) in 1856. Lydia was the daughter of Kendrick Rowell and Sarah Hawes of Hatley. Charles and Lydia adopted a child, Abbie A. Willard who married Nehemiah Batley.

Batley
Family

Robert Batley (May 5th, 1806 to January 20th, 1891) came from Kenning Hall, Norfolk, England to Brookbury. Robert married Ann Warren Batley, she was his second wife. Ann was also born in England. Ann died on September 6th, 1895 aged 78 years.

Bown
Family

Captain Thomas Charles Bown was the founder of Bown, Quebec. He came from England and was among the first settlers in Bury in 1836. He took up land and made a home on the Victoria Road mid-way between Bury and Scotstown. In 1841 Thomas was elected delegate to represent Bury at first meeting of the council of the district of Sherbrooke. In 1842, he was elected to first town council in Bury. Thomas was captain in the militia. He promoted the establishment of the first school in his district, known as the Bown School. He also gave land for a church and cemetery near his home. Thomas married Mary Ann Sharman. They had two daughters: Ann Jane, and Mary Aurelia, and three sons, Thomas Jr., and William (who went into the lumber business). Thomas died on June 30th, 1877 aged 87. Mary Ann died on October 1st, 1909, aged 87. They are buried in Bown Cemetery.

Sawyer
Family

Mary (Polly) Hall Sawyer (January 9th, 1787 to May 22nd, 1864). She was the daughter of Hannaniah Hall and Mary Osgood. Mary (Polly) was the wife of Peter Green Sawyer (May 8th, 1783 to July 2nd, 1867). Peter was the son of Josiah Esq. (1757 to March 10th, 1837) and Susanna Green (1757-1836). Josiah was the first pioneer to establish a homestead in the Township of Eaton raising his log cabin on the present site of Sawyerville. Mary and Peter are buried in Grovehill Cemetery. Jerome Sawyer (1834-1919) was the son of Mary (Polly ) Hall and Peter Green Sawyer. Margaret Cairns was Jerome's first wife, and Maria Osgood was his second. Jerome is buried in Eaton Cemetery.

Riddell
Family

Joseph Riddell (September 20th, 1873 to August 27th, 1945). Joseph was married to Jessie Minerva Hurd (October 4th, 1878 to April 27th, 1957). Joseph was the son of James Riddell and Mary Jane Doherty. Jessie Hurd was the daughter of Edmund H. Hurd and Eliza B. McCurdy. Joseph was in farming and lumbering, and Jessie taught school. They had no children. They are buried in Maple Leaf cemetery.

Rogers
Family

William Rogers was born in 1828, and died on March 7th, 1892. William always lived on the old home farm in Cookshire. William married Mary Sophia Lake. Mary was born on January 20th, 1852, and died on March 14th, 1892. She was the daughter of Samuel Lake and Mary Sophia Hall. William and Mary had one son, Wells who was born on April 2nd, 1880. Wells married Georgia Maria Bridgette. Mary died on November 24th, 1931.

John French was born in Cornwall, England on March 19th 1824, and died on February 1st, 1916. John came to Canada and settled on a farm located near Flanders in 1843. John married Emma Parsons in Eaton on October 14th, 1858. Emma was born in England on April 19th, 1830, and died on July 29th, 1905, she was the daughter of George Parsons. John and Emma had eight children: Frederick W. who was born on July 31st, 1859, and he married Eliza Jane Bridgett. John W. who was born on June 27th, 1866. Charles D. who was born on June 19th, 1870. Abel E. who was born on March 7th, 1876. Ella J. was born on January 29th, 1861, and she married Benjamin Farnsworth. Alice M. who was born on October 28th, 1862, and married Eugene Baldwin. Annie E. who was born on August 20th, 1864. Emma C. who was born of August 3rd, 1873. Charles and John were two enterprising young men who took a deep interest in telephone lines and electric light plants. Around 1891 they built an extensive telephone line through Eaton connecting with points in Newport, Bury, Scotstown and elsewhere. They sold this line to the Bell Telephone Company in 1893. In the same year they built an electric light plant for Sawyerville. In 1895, they built the telephone line from Sawyerville through East Clifton to Beecher Falls, VT., on a contract with the Canadian Telephone Company.

Chute
Family

Curtis Chute Sr. was born at Otisfield, Maine in March 1845, and died on September 27th, 1926. He was the son of John Chute and Marion Turner. Curtis married Almeda Stone and they came to Compton together around 1867. They later moved to East Clifton Road, and in May 1897 they purchased a farm on Jordan Hill Road from Robert Thompson. Curtis married his second wife, Luvia Brown, who was the daughter of Thomas Brown and his wife Elizabeth Merrill. Luvia was born on April 22nd, 1858, and died on May 27th, 1937. Curtis and Luvia had two daughters: Myrtle Emma (July 29th, 1890 to April 22nd 1982). She was the last member of the Chute family that came to Eaton Corner in 1897. Their second daughter was Bernice Estella Chute (March 16th, 1894 to July 14th, 1964). Ethel Estella Brown "Aunt Stella" was the sister of Luvia. She was born on December 14th, 1860, and she died on June 29th, 1940.

Taylor
Family

Joseph L. Taylor was born on November 25th, 1829 in Cookshire. He was the son of Ezra Taylor. Joseph taught school, afterwards becoming a farmer. He held prominent public offices such as councilor and school commissioner. On September 5th, 1853, he married Theodotia Laberee, who was the daughter of Henry Laberee and granddaughter of Rufus Laberee Sr.. They had seven children. Their first was Edwin Augustus who was born on July 22nd, 1854. Edwin married Maggie Nutbrown (they had five children). Joseph and Theodotia's second child was Orion Stewart, who was born on January 30th, 1857. Orion married Katharine A. Vedder of New York (they had two children). Frederick Arthur was born on March 23rd, 1859. Frederick married L. Gertrude McClary (they had three children). Henry Joseph was born on October 30th, 1860. Henry married Eva L. Todd (they had two children). Edgar Erwin was born on January 7th, 1873. Edgar married Etta F. Todd (they had one child). Harriet Theodotia was born on October 30th, 1860. Harriet married Henry A. Planche (they had six children). Clara Persis was born on December 31st, 1864. Clara first married S. W. Irwin, and then Alton Brazzle (they had one child). Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Taylor occupied the farm originally settled by Rufus Laberee Sr., in 1798, the house being erected by Mr. Laberee in 1812, it was then occupied by his son Henry up to his death in 1860 when it was acquired by Mr. Taylor.

Frye
Family

John Frye was born in 1840. He was married to Cynthia Bowen who was born in 1851. Cynthia was adopted as an infant by Mr. and Mrs. Israel Bowen. Cynthia was a school teacher. She and John were married for over 40 years. Their children were both adopted: a son and a daughter. John died on December 30th, 1919 at age 79 years. Cynthia died at Johnville on August 14th, 1921. They are both buried in Malvern Cemetery, Lennoxville.

Worby
Family

David Worby was born in England on February 16th, 1827, and died on May 22nd, 1904. David and his six siblings came with his parents, George Worby and Rececca Quantrill from England, Norfolk County, Banham village to the Brookbury area under the auspices of the British Land Company in 1836. George and Rebecca are buried in St. John's Cemetery, Brookbury, Quebec. David married Jane Williams (d. September 12th, 1884 at 56 years of age). David was the owner of the Worby Factory making the famous Worby chairs over a span of more than 30 years. The factory was located between Eaton Corner and Sawyerville where the Sawyer Brook meets the Eaton River. He bought the building and land on part of lot 5H, range 4 from Henry Laberee on December 17th, 1862. In 1895 the Eaton River flooded taking away the Worby mill and business, but not the furniture store. Both David and Jane are buried in the Eaton Cemetery.

Mackay
Family

Robert Mackay and Emma Thompson were married on December 31st, 1890. Emma had a sister named Sarah Edwards who was born on November 26th, 1867. Robert and Emma had three children. Their first was Dora Emily who was born on March 7th, 1892, and died on February 18th, 1948. Dora married Leeman Layton MacKey, the son of William MacKey and Jemima Rice on December 31st, 1912. Their second daughter was Olive Grace who was born on June 5th, 1894, and who died on June 7th, 1983. Olive married Mark Allen Porter on June 21st, 1916. Their son was Richard, who was born on September 11th, 1901, and who died on November 21st, 1985. Richard married Vivian Little on June 28th, 1934.

Family

Cyrus W. Warner and Belinda Heath are listed in the Sandhill Cemetery records as the parents of Chester William Warner (October 27th, 1813 to November 26th, 1882) and of Caroline Warner (d. December 23rd, 1866). Caroline was married to Ebenezer Eastman.

Caswell

Elsa Caswell was married to Howard Caswell on December 7th, 1929. Howard was the son of Charles Frederick Caswell and Wealthy D. Squire. Charles was the son of Denison Caswell and Ellen McClary. Denison was the son of Bingham Caswell and Nellie Chase.

Cobleigh
Family

Charles was born in Northumberland, NH on July 4th, 1835. He died on August 21st, 1907. Charles married Janet Parker in West Stewartstown, NH in 1885. Janet Parker was born in Cannan, VT on October 8th, 1853, and died on March 1st, 1925. They are both buried in Eaton Cemetery. Charles came to Scotstown from Gillhall, NH in 1884, moving to Eaton Corner in 1888. Charles served in the American Civil War, from 1861-1865. He contracted yellow fever and left the army with a pension of $5.00 a month for life. Charles was a qualified accountant. His wife took an active part in the community. Their children were: Ina Laura (1886 to May 12th, 1957 in Sherbrooke), Eva Janet (July 11th, 1888 to 1967), Beatrice Emma (Bessie) (January 31st, 1890 in Eaton to May 30th, 1968 at the Wales Home in Richmond). Eva married Dr. Robert H. MacRae on September 2nd, 1914. Beatrice married Oscar Honore Seveigny on October 18th, 1911.

Picard

George Rafael Picard (1808 - Oct. 25, 1892) was married to Emma Sawyer (Jan. 15, 1817 - Jan. 18, 1858). Emma was George's first wife. Emma was the daughter of Mary (Polly) Hall Sawyer and Peter G. Sawyer. George Picard came from France. He was a tanner in Eaton, right on the corner at the Lower Road. George was said to be a dapper gentleman when dressed in his Prince Albert coat and tall silk hat. He was a Catholic, as well as fluent in both languages. George is said to have made the first wagon in this area. He used leather for springs. All of George and Emma's children were baptized in the Catholic Church in Cookshire. Both George and Emma are buried in Eaton Cemetery. Matilda French was George's second wife.

Burns
Family

John Burns (December 3rd, 1862 to May 30th, 1945) and Naomi Miller Burns (June 1868 to February 17th, 1955). John and Naomi were married on January 4th, 1887. John came to Island Brook with his parents in 1873. Naomi's parents arrived in Island Brook in January 1868. Naomi was the first child born east of Island Brook. John was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1910, a position he held for 40 years.

Bowen
Family

Ezekiel Elliott Bowen was a blacksmith and farmer. He was born in Compton on June 19th, 1842. Ezekiel lived in Ascot, Moe's River, and Island Brook. Ezekiel married Susan (daughter of Lyndolph Caswell of Johnville) at Huntingville on March 26th, 1863. Ezekiel held the office of school commissioner, and financial secretary of the I.O.F.. Ezekiel and Susan had three children. Their first son was Maurice W. (b. May 4th, 1871) who married Jennie I. Chandler of Bartlett, NH on January 1st, 1896. Their second son was Henry L. (b. July 2nd, 1872). Henry married Lizzie M. Tracey of Bartlett, NH on May 22nd, 1895. Their daughter was Inez E. B. (b. June 17th, 1876). Ezekiel’s brother Anthony Frederick Bowen was a farmer. He was born in Ascot on June 14th, 1847. He moved to his farm in Learned Plain in 1878. Before farming he was a teacher and a photographer. He held various municipal offices including office of secretary of the Patrons of Industry of Compton County in 1895. He was married in Newport on December 31st, 1867 to Marion (daughter of Silas Harvey). They had five children: Archibald R. (b. June 10th, 1874), Ernest I.S. (b. October 20th, 1881), Beatrice M. (b. November 24th, 1869), Viviane A. (b. March 10th, 1871), Mehitable E. (b. July 11th, 1877). Beatrice married H. C. Bailey on June 18th, 1890. Ezekiel and Anthony's father, Israel Bowen died at Island Brook on December 18th, 1887, aged 77 years. Their mother, Mehitable Elliott was born in Lennoxville on August 30th, 1802, and died at Island Brook in September 1889.

Sunbury
Family

Sarah Fallon (d. June 16th, 1904 aged 72 years) came from Ireland in 1830 with her parents Owen (d. July 6th, 1872 aged 65 years) and Mary Gray Fallon (1806 to April 17th, 1898). Mr. and Mrs. Fallon eventually bought the property beside the Maple Leaf Cemetery. Sarah was one of nine siblings. Sarah, also called Sally, married Russell Sunbury (March 25th, 1831 to February 4th, 1915). At the age of 21, Russell started on the farm where he remained the rest of his life. Sarah and Russell had three children: Ella (Gerry Young), Kate (Charles Planche), and Cora (Byron Austin) who remained on the Sunbury home farm all her life. Ella and Kate moved to the United States.

Harvey
Family

Almer I. Harvey (October 16th, 1847 to September 3rd, 1927) was married to Hannah Amelia Osgood (November 22nd, 1848 to January 6th, 1929). Almer was the son of John Harvey and Clarinda Tory and was born at Newport Township. He lived for 72 years on the farm where he was born and he was the last remaining one out of a family of nine. Hannah was born in Quincy, Mass., and moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abner Osgood to Eaton Corner in 1860. Almer and Hannah were married on June 28th, 1870. They had six children together. Almer and Hannah are buried in Eaton Cemetery.

Rand
Family

Artemas D. Rand came to Newport as a small boy. His mother was Hannah Willard. Artemas died in 1877 at the age of 83. Gardner Stillman Rand was Artemas Rand's son. Gardner was born in Newport Township on May 8th, 1830. He was a farmer and a mill owner. Gardner sub-divided part of his large farm in the period of 1870-1885 to form the village of Randville, Quebec. A few years afterwards when a post office was established in the village store, it was found that elsewhere in Canada there was already a Randville Post Office and consequently the name Randboro was officially adopted as the name of the town. Gardner built a dam in the gorge of the south branch of the Eaton River that ran through part of his farm. With water power from this pond to drive a turbine he then built a multi-purpose mill (sawmill, shingle and clapboard mill, and grist mill). This installation was washed completely away in a cloudburst flood on July 2nd, 1907. Gardner held offices of councilor, as well as school commissioner. Gardner was married to Celestia Annett, daughter of Russell Williams and Alice Hinckley of Eaton. Celestia died on October 13th, 1918. Together they had seven children: Flora A., Corrilla F., Hollis G., Alice Adella, Luna M., Lucia A., and Myrtie. Gardner and Celestia are buried in Maple Leaf Cemetery, one mile east of the village of Randboro.

Bowker
Family

Lewis Leander Bowker was born in Vermont on October 28th, 1821. Lewis was the son of Lyman Bowker and Betsy Merriman. Lyman and Betsy are buried in Grove Hill Cemetery. They came to Canada and settled in Compton County on lot 3, range 7 in 1836. Lewis was a farmer, he married Lucy Minerva Hurd on October 21st, 1845. Lucy was the daughter of Edmund Hurd. Lewis and Lucy had four children: Edmund Hurd (b. June 23rd, 1849), Lyman James (b. July 5th, 1853), Luvia Amanda (b. September 2nd, 1855), Herbert Rice (b. December 1st, 1857). Lewis died on February 16th, 1905. Lucy died on August 4th, 1897. They are buried in Grove Hill Cemetery. Lewis and Lucy's son Lyman James Bowker (July 5th, 1853 to March 22nd, 1924) married Clarinda (Clara) L. Harvey (April 9th, 1853 to November 6th, 1919). Clarinda was the daughter of John Harvey and his wife, Clarinda Tory. Lyman and Clara had two children: Elwin and Lucie (Walter Sherman). Lyman and Clara are buried in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Joyce
Family

Effie May Joyce was born on October 2nd, 1884 in Brookbury. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cook. Effie May married Curtis Allan Joyce on September 19th, 1906. They spent 36 years on the Joyce family farm, a short distance from the Cook homestead. Curtis Allan was born in Brookbury on April 17th, 1878, and he died on August 17th, 1963. Effie died on July 30th, 1981. Effie and Curtis had three children: Florence (who married Samuel Shirley), Leslie, and Gordon.
